NSACC and MTN Strengthen Bilateral Ties Through Media Innovation Programme

In collaboration with MTN Nigeria, the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce (NSACC) has unveiled a new initiative that aims to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations by utilizing the media’s ability to serve as a bridge-builder.

When INSEAD graduates visited MTN Nigeria’s corporate headquarters, the initiative was highlighted. The conversation focused on how Africa’s telecom revolution can accelerate national development goals and strengthen Nigeria-South Africa cooperation.

Media as a Bridge Between Nigeria and South Africa

With the theme “Media as a Bridge: Strengthening Nigeria-South Africa Ties through the MTN Media Innovation Programme (MIP),” the event emphasized how important the media is in influencing stories and shattering stereotypes, particularly as the Chamber marks its 25th anniversary.

The Media Innovation Programme (MIP) was established to address stereotypes and false information in cross-border reporting, according to Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria. As a diplomatic tool that enables Nigerian journalists to obtain firsthand exposure through study tours in South Africa, he revealed that MTN intends to expand the program throughout Africa.

“If Nigeria and South Africa can get their act together, the rest of the continent will follow,” Okigbo emphasized.

Academia-Industry Collaboration for Balanced Reporting

Dr. Ikechukwu Obiaya, dean of Pan-Atlantic University’s School of Media and Communication, emphasized in his keynote speech that the media is essential in influencing public opinion and promoting ethical journalism.

He outlined three pillars for building stronger bilateral relations:

  1. Training competent media professionals with social responsibility.

  2. Promoting sustainable university-industry collaborations.

  3. Encouraging balanced, contextual, and ethical reporting.

“The media will not achieve this if practitioners are not well-formed and adequately exposed to the realities they report on,” Obiaya noted.

NSACC’s 25th Anniversary: A New Era of Growth

The NSACC Chairperson, Dr. Ije Jidenma, commended MTN for its investment in innovation that crosses national boundaries and praised the media’s function as a development catalyst.

Jidenma, who unveiled the NSACC 25th Anniversary Logo, characterized the occasion as a symbolic beginning of a new stage of the Chamber’s development. She underlined that the anniversary strengthens the Chamber’s role as a catalyst for bilateral cooperation while also signifying increased opportunities for its members.

Why This Matters

  • The Nigeria-South Africa relationship is critical for Africa’s economic growth, accounting for two of the continent’s largest economies.

  • Media innovation programmes like MIP foster trust, tackle misinformation, and promote cross-cultural understanding.

  • Stronger ties between Nigeria and South Africa could set the pace for broader African continental integration.
